Staying Healthy this Cold & Flu Season

Fall is here, and with it are the colds and flus that knock us down.

 

But have no fear! Here at REBEL, we have some tricks to make sure your immune system is in top condition and, if you do get a cold or flu, they’ll help you knock it out as quickly and comfortably as possible.  And, because we’re nice, we wanted to share them directly with you.

 

So let’s dive in...

 

Essential Oils

Essential oils are extracted from plants that have biological healing properties. They’ve been used for centuries and have documented effects besides just smelling nice.

 

To use essential oils, you really have a couple of choices.  Most people will prefer to either use them topically or put them in a diffuser, though you can take some essential oils orally, too.

 

Our favorites for kicking a cold or flu are...

 

Eucalyptus

This oil contains eucalyptol, which relieves congestion, decreases coughing/bronchitis, and kills infectious bacteria in your respiratory tract. Rub some under each nostril if you're stuffed up.

 

Oregano

Oregano oil is an antiviral, antifungal, and antioxidant.  Swallow 4-6 drops of oregano oil diluted in coconut oil, or enjoy an oregano supplement if you prefer.  (NOTE: Don’t take oregano oil for more than a week straight.)

 

Tea Tree

This oil kills resistant bacteria. It’s ideal for disinfecting your house if you have a cold, or you can breathe in tea tree oil vapor to relieve congestion. Just don’t swallow this oil, because it’s actually poisonous.  (We want you alive… you’re more fun that way.)

 

Supplements

Supplements get a bad rap, but it’s all about the quality of the supplement that you purchase.  They work great for enhancing your immune system, and there are a few superstar supplements we recommend specifically.  The below supplements all have tons of research behind them and we take them regularly ourselves.

 

Vitamin D3

During cold weather months, taking 1,000 IU of D3 for every 25lbs of body weight can greatly increase your ability to fight off infections.

 

Vitamin C

Contrary to popular belief, Vitamin C won’t necessarily prevent you from getting sick. It can, however, help you get rid of your cold more quickly. When you’re getting sick, your body will demand far more vitamin C than normal, so adding more to your diet via supplements can be a good choice.

 

Glutathione

This supplement recharges antioxidants after your body uses them, so taking it in conjunction with Vitamin C gives you an extra antioxidant boost. When you’re getting sick, you have more oxidative stress and more free radicals to quench, so this will enhance the power of the additional supplements you take.

 

Zinc

Zinc can help you kick a cold faster and decrease your symptoms, too…as long as you take it within 24 hours of the cold’s onset.  Might want to keep some extras of this supplement handy.

 

Foods

Chicken Soup

The old classic really does kill pathogens that cause upper respiratory infections. Always get or make your chicken soup from the bones of pasture-raised chickens for ultimate health benefits, though you can also use beef or lamb bone broth bases and receive a similar benefit if you prefer.

 

Ginger

Ginger contains sesquiterpenes , which specifically fight the rhinovirus – that’s the virus responsible for many colds.  Make ginger tea, eat raw ginger, or add ginger to your chicken soup for maximum health benefits.

 

Garlic

Garlic is a strong antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and antifungal. It also boosts your immune system.  Add it to your favorite dishes for a healthy and tasty treat.

 

Turmeric

This food is full of antioxidants and curcuminoids, the most famous of which is curcumin.  Curcumin regulates your immune system and is a strong anti-inflammatory. Purchase it combined with black pepper extract, which boosts bioavailability considerably.

 

Egg Yolks

Yeah, yeah egg yolks are high in cholesterol, blah blah blah. But, cholesterol can be GOOD for you! Not only that, but egg yolks are FULL of protein, which’ll help you battle immune-related illness. AND they contain zinc and selenium - minerals that are essential in boosting your immune system! Chuck a couple of organic, pasture-raised egg yolks into your morning smoothie to make it rich, delicious, and creamy!
