So what is Vitamin D?
Vitamin D refers to a group of fat-soluble secosteroids that are responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, and zinc. It’s essential in maintaining good overall health, and strong and healthy bones. It’s also an important factor in ensuring your muscles, heart, lungs, and brain work well, and that your body is capable of fighting against infection.
Vitamin D is one of the only vitamins your body is capable of producing on it’s own - when your skin is exposed to sunlight, it produces Vitamin D. With that, sunlight isn’t always readily available, and supplementation is often suggested to meet and maintain the levels required by your body.
When your body gets Vitamin D from the sun, or ingested through supplements, it’s sent to your liver where it’s changed to a substance called 25(OH)D (not super important to remember that, don’t worry!), and then onto your kidneys where it’s turned into a hormone referred to as “activated Vitamin D”. By that point, it’s finally ready to be used by your body - it’s used to manage the amount of calcium in your blood, bones, and gut, and to help cells all over your body to communicate properly.
What else can Vitamin D do for you?
- Supports your immune system and decreases your likelihood of developing the flu.
- Regulates insulin levels and aids in diabetes management
- Supports lung function and cardiovascular health
- Can help to increase your fertility
- Improves muscle function
- Can help to prevent breast cancer
Now you know how powerful Vitamin D is, and why it’s a vital part of your body’s ability to function, so … come check out the retail store in our studio and pick some up for yourself!
