So what is DHEA?
Dehydroepiandrosterone is an adrenal steroid hormone in the body. It is made by the adrenal glands and is then converted to androgens, estrogens and other hormones. These are the hormones that regulate the thyroid and pituitary glands - meaning they regulate fat and mineral metabolism, sexual and reproductive function, and energy levels. It is often referred to as the “master” hormone, as it is the building block from which estrogen and testosterone are produced.
Taken in supplement form, it’s is used for the synthesis of important hormones and for a variety of potential physiological responses such as healthy aging, ongoing energy and vitality, a balanced stress response, as well as muscle integrity and fat reduction.
Natural DHEA levels tend to peak when you hit 25, and slowly decline each year thereafter. Unfortunately, DHEA does not occur naturally in foods, so the only way to sustain the levels in your body is through supplements.
What else can DHEA do for you?
- It’s a powerful antioxidant.
- It can help decrease cholesterol levels.
- It helps the body return to a balanced state after a stressful situation.
- It can increase the brain’s levels of serotonin - your “happy” hormone.
- It has anti-aging properties.
- It can be used to combat erectile disfunction.
- It can help improve bone mineral density.
As you can see, DHEA can help your body in SO.MANY.WAYS. If you want to get some for yourself, come check out the retail store in our studio!
